Attribution and licences

None of the data here was invented. Every source is named below with the licence it is published under, what we take from it, what that licence asks of us in return, and how fresh it is right now. The attribution text is reproduced exactly as the publisher wrote it.

This page is the legal one: who owns the data and what we owe them. Its companion, the data-source register, is the operational one: whether a feed is still alive, which parts of it have stopped moving, and how many rows each has delivered. Both read the same register, so a source cannot appear on one and be missing from the other.

How the numbers built out of this data are computed is a third question, answered on methodology.

checkjebon Dutch supermarket prices

checkjebon
What we take from it

Product names, pack sizes and shelf prices for Dutch supermarket chains, taken from the dated JSON files committed to the repository. Several years of them, which is the point: the value here is the history, not this morning's price.

What the licence requires of us
  • Retain the copyright notice and the permission notice. MIT asks for the notice to travel with the work, so it travels with this page, and this page is linked from every other one.
  • Nothing further. MIT imposes no share-alike condition, so these rows sit in the core corpus rather than in a separate namespace.

13 of 15 parts of this feed have stopped changing. Their prices are history, not current prices.

Treat these prices as a record of what things cost, not as what they cost today. Most of the chains in this feed stopped being scraped, each on its own date, and the page for the source names which parts are still moving.

What we take from it

Pump prices for diesel, SP95, E10, SP98, E85 and LPG at French service stations, with each station's address, brand and coordinates. Read from the instantaneous open-data feed published by the Ministère de l'Économie.

What the licence requires of us
  • Name the source and the licence wherever the data, or anything derived from it, is reproduced. That is what this page does, and it is why the link to it sits in the footer of every page.
  • State the date of the last update. Every price on the site carries its observation date, and the register records when the feed last delivered.
  • Do not suggest the French administration endorses pricewatch, produced it, or is involved in it in any way. It is not.

The licence grants reuse including commercial reuse, and it is not share-alike, so these rows sit in the core corpus alongside everything else.

What we take from it

Individual prices photographed or typed in by readers, each attached to a seller and a date.

What the licence requires of us
  • Credit the contributor on the observation itself, which the ledger on every entity page does.
  • Honour a withdrawal. A contributor can pull their rows, and because every observation carries the id of the source it came from, they can be excised and the aggregates recomputed from what remains.

If you publish data here and want it removed

Every observation carries the id of the source it came from, on the row and not just on the batch that loaded it. A withdrawal is therefore a deletion and a recomputation, not a rebuild: the rows go, every aggregate is recalculated from what remains, and no figure is left standing with nothing behind it.

Share-alike licences, principally ODbL, are loaded into a separate namespace and never merged into the core corpus, because a share-alike obligation propagates to any derived database and would silently relicense every other publisher’s data alongside it.

Prices are reported by contributors and gathered from public sources. They change constantly and may be out of date. Always check with the seller before you buy or travel.
